What is #MBE Learning?

More important than what is who. The person is my daughter; her initials are M.B.E. My intent when I started #MBE Learning was to share what I learned about easily learning new skills. For the past 12 years, I’ve been working in the learning & development field. I facilitated classes, created instructional programs, and coached people to acquire new skills. In my spare time, I studied learning as a hobby. For as long as I could remember, I’ve had the belief that if you could learn anything, you could do anything.

In May of 2018, I thought to myself, “what could I do to put a dent in the Universe?” I asked myself the following questions:

· What am I smart at?

· What do I have experience in?

· What am I naturally good at?

· What do I love doing that could also make me a living?

For me, the answer to all of these questions is helping people learn and acquire skills. However, I didn’t want to be limited to working with people from one particular company. I wanted to be able to work with anyone and everyone that is curious, wanting to learn new skills, and interested in developing themselves. So, I made the switch from corporate learning to personal learning.

When I began this journey, I started to realize that it was so much more than sharing what I learned about learning. I should have known better because there is a 70-20-10 model for learning & development. The model corresponds to a proportional breakdown of how people learn effectively. The model is as follows:

At first, I was focused on sharing the #MBE Learning Method – a methodology I created to easily learn new skills. As you can see in the 70-20-10 model, the methodology is a small percentage of the learning process. I quickly learned that the methodology was a tool and not the be-all and end-all. A bigger area I could support in was coaching and supporting the learning experience. I had the skillset to coach people, but I did not have the confidence to be a coach.

This journey taught me a lot about myself. I learned why I was in denial about being a coach, I learned areas of my life that I was lacking (i.e. confidence), and I learned what I was put on this Earth to do. I realize that some of what I write can be strong and offensive, but I don’t mean to offend anyone. I am just trying to be me, and my intent is to help people. I have learned to be confident in who I am, because for the first time in my life I truly know who I am. I was able to realize all of this with the help of some really good coaches.

To answer the question of “what is #MBE Learning?” It is a place to learn about learning, learn about yourself, and learn from others. #MBE Learning provides coaching that is developmental (e.g. to acquire a new skill) and rehabilitative (e.g. to change a behaviour). The coaching leverages a person’s mind, body, and essence (#MBE), explained in the image below:

What started as a way to help make this world a better place by supporting people to become better learners and achieve their goals, has turned into something much deeper. The essence is still the same – to help make this world a better place – but it is much deeper than achieving goals. Achieving goals and the feeling you get when you achieve your goals is just the start of what we can do to make this world a better place.
